Highlights from the video....

1. Smugmug issues with searches are resolved. All of the searches on my Smugmug galleries are back to normal.

2. The Urushi Mina's are complete, and there are 4 left!

Urushi Mina Update! We're at the Home Stretch!

Hi Pen Fans!

Well, the Urushi Mina Project is coming to a close.

We anticipate shipping these pens the week of April 9th!

Before I get ahead of myself, here's a photo update....

But this is only a teaser. Be sure to visit the Urushi Mina Project Page for the complete update, showing all details and steps.

As stated, these pens will be ready to ship the week of April 9th.

All of these pens will be first come, first serve. Here's how it will work...

When the pens are ready to ship, we will make a blog announcement to officially open the buying process. This will be a blog post here on the Edison Pen website. Final pictures will also be posted at that time.

If you want to make sure that you get this announcement immediately, I recommend that you subscribe to the Edison Pen Co blog. On the upper-right side of the Edison website, you'll see a box that says "subscribe". By inserting your email, you'll get all the Edison updates automatically to your inbox. If you received this announcement via email, then you already subscribe.

The first 10 pens will be ready to ship the week of April 9th. The second set of 10 pens will be ready to ship approximately a month later, so early/mid May. But we will accept money on all 20 pens when the buying period officially opens.

Price will be $850 and then $20 domestic shipping. International shipping will be quoted for each order. The pen will come with an 18k nib in your choice of F, M, B, or customized to your specifications.

Urushi Mina Update!

Hi Pen Fans!

It's time for an update to the Urushi Mina Project.

I gotta say, this stage is one of the absolute coolest techniques that I've ever seen! I've watched Ernest's video about 5 times already!

At this stage, a urushi mixture is floated on water. The mixture then jets across the surface of the water and coalesces into a fine reticulated network as the alcohol separates out of the mixture and dissolves into the water. This looks like a very interesting spider-web.

The pen parts are then carefully dipped into the mixture, and this "spider web" clings to the pen. Amazing!

Some of you may be unaware, so I wanted to mention that the Limited Edition Urushi Pens are not the only Urushi offerings that Ernest from Hakumin Urushi and I offer.

We do take custom comissions. If you have interest in customizing a Urushi pen, I encourage your to reach out to Ernest of myself. But Urushi pens can take a very long time to manufacture, so for those not wanting to wait, there is inventory ready to sell...

Hi Pen Fans!

The Edison Pen Company is proud to announce it's second collaborative project with Ernest Shin, of Hakumin Urushi Kobo.

This new Urushi project will be based on the Herald Pen.

This is coming on the heels of the Pearl Urushi Project, which was a smashing success.

Edison and Hakumin Urushi will create a unique Kara-nuri version of the Herald. This will be a Limited Edition of only 20 pens.

The Urushi Pearl technique was definitely visually active. This Urushi Herald will be in cooler tones and more subdued, in comparison, using shades of teal blue accented with gold. See the photos below.

This technique is similar to the one used on the Urushi Pearl Project with the key differences how the mottling is applied and the pigmentation of the lacquer. The base color of this lacquer was produced by carefully choosing a mixture various modern and traditional pigments to produce a lacquer that would not darken excessively while maintaining the same degree of durability and hardness urushi is known for. The different shades seen in the sample were then created by adding small amounts of a tinting pigment to produce lighter tints of the same color which were then applied in subsequent layers to produce an active play of shades. The gold accents used in this technique, is 23.5K gold powder of the same sort used in the Urushi Pearl Project

Here is a photo of the Herald Pen. Based on this poll at the Fountain Pen Network, this will be a clipless pen.

And here is an example of the Urushi technique that will be used on this pen....

The same as the Pearl Urushi Project, we are taking orders, and then the pens will be constructed. The process will be documented with photos and video so you want watch your pen being "born".

The Next Urushi Project - We Need Your Help!

Hi Pen Fans!

I'd like to thank everyone for their interest in the Urushi Pearl Project, the first LE project between Edison and Hakumin Urushi Kobo. The project was a huge success and we have decided that we are going to continue this cooperative effort.

In fact, we are currently in the process of planning our next LE! We have decided that this next edition will be done on the Herald and we have some good ideas for the technique, which will be something different from the Pearl LE. While we are keeping the specific technique under wraps for now, we will say that the color scheme will be in the cooler side of the spectrum this time and that we will be using rhodium trim.

However, we are stuck on deciding one thing. Clip or no clip? A clip would add convenience and stop a pen from rolling away. Going clipless would emphasize an unbroken surface of the lacquer and show off the purity of the design. Which do we choose? Either way would be beautiful, and it ends up all being a matter of personal preference.

And so we have decided, who better to decide than those who will be owning them?

We have started a poll over at the Fountain Pen Network to put this up for a vote among our clients.

The Urushi Pearls are Finished, and Teaming Up with Hakumin Urushi in DC!

Hi Pen Fans!

I have two items to cover in this blog entry. Both involve Ernest, with Hakumin Urushi Kobo.

First, I am pleased to announce that Ernest and I will be teaming up and sharing a table at the DC Pen Show this weekend.

Our teaming up will truly make for a phenomenal custom pen opportunity.

If the customer wishes, a custom order for any Edison Pen can be placed, with Ernest working his urushi magic on said pen. Or we can work with the customer to create a completely new design.

This means that the possibilities are endless. Any Edison Pen or any custom Edison creation can be comissioned. Then the customer can discuss lacquer techniques with Ernest to customize a wonderful traditional Japanese lacquer finish.

This certainly represents something awfully unique in the pen world.

Second, The Urushi Pearls are Finished!

I will have more completed photos up on the Urushi Peal Page later, as I'm busy getting ready for the DC Pen Show.

This has been a fantastic project. Ernest and I are already making plans for the next Limited Edition. If you want to subscribe to my blog (upper-right-hand corner of this page), you will be automatically updated when we are starting the next series, and taking orders.

Urushi Update - An Exciting Step....

Hi Pen Fans!

The Pearl Urushi Project is getting even more exciting.

We are at the Togi (sanding) stage. This means that all of the work to create the layers of gold and lacquer are starting to emerge.

At this point, careful sanding exposes the layers that have been built up and hidden until now.
