A Double-Ended Pen? Why Not?

Hi Pen Fans!

Without a doubt, the best aspect of manufacturing custom pens is that my customers are always coming to me with new ideas for custom creations.  If I only did pens in a production setting, I think that it would be easy to get stuck in creative ruts.

Usually when I create a completely custom pen, I don’t bother with making any big announcement, but I think that this one deserves a little recognition for my customers who might appreciate the design.

A client of mine approached me with an idea for a custom double ended pen.  The idea was to have two separate ink reservoirs with two different nibs all in the same pen.  I really liked the idea, but I was worried about whether or not having two decent sized ink reservoirs would make the pen really big and awkward.  After about 3-4 prototypes, we came up with what I think really nailed the design.  See below….

As you can see, the pen will be an Eyedropper filler only.  With the first couple of prototypes, we tried to make it long enough for cartridges, but this extra length definitely made the pen too long.  As is, this pen comes in at a touch over 6" capped.  I didn’t want to get much longer than this, so Eyedropper only was the best route.

But with a smaller design like this, how much will ink capacity suffer?  This was my real concern with this design.  It turns out to be no issue at all.  Each reservoir will hold 1.25mL,  In comparison, a converter holds a bit less than .5mL.  So even with these smaller reservoirs, the pen still holds nearly triple the capacity of a converter.  Almost 6 times the capacity if you count both reservoirs.  Not only that, but I could probably customize the interior of the reservoirs to hold even a little bit more.

One might ask about the inherent issue of an Eyedropper burping.  This should be eliminated on this pen.  The phenomenon of ED burping is where an Eyedropper pen will burp a small amount of ink at the very end of a fill, due to a very large ink reservoir.  When the fill gets to the very end of a very large ink reservoir like most eyedroppers, the pen can lose a little vacuum due to the air being compressible and "elastic".  Since these reservoirs are smaller, this should never happen with this pen.

The obvious benefits of this pen (besides the "cool" factor) is that you can have two pens in one.  Two nibs of two different tip sizes, and two different inks if you like.  Also visible ink reservoirs.

Here are photos of the pen next to a standard Pearl for comparison purposes.

As you can see, the pen will be a little longer that the standard Pearl when one cap is removed, but not to the point where it would be unwieldy.

If anyone is interested in a pen of the same design, obviously the transparent ink reservoir can be any color, and the caps/sections can be any material.  And no reason that this needs to be based on the Pearl.  I don’t see why this idea couldn’t be adapted to any of our designs.

Cost of this design will be $350 with two steel nibs.  $450 with one steel and one 18k nib, and $550 with two 18k nibs.  If you are interested, you can email me to inquire.

Thanks!

Introducing a New Retailer Carrying the Production Line – Tim Girdler Pens!

Hi Pen Fans!

I’m very happy to introduce a new retailer that will be carrying our Production Line.

Here at Edison, we are typically a little picky about who carries our Production Pens, and there is no exception in our newest retailer – Tim Girdler of Tim Girdler Pens. (you can see Tim hard at work in the pic below).

I’ve known Tim from the Pen Show circuit for a while now, and we’ve done plenty of business in the past.  You couldn’t meet a nicer or more honest person!

Tim’s business has historically been focused on vintage pen resoration, as well as custom nib grinds and tuning.  When he began branching out to selling new pens, we figured that our businesses would compliment each other very well.

I encourage you to visit Tim’s site and have a look around.  Not only at the Edison Pens, but be sure to check out his custom grind and pen restoration services.  Tim spent a lot of time under the tutelage of Richard Binder.  You can rest assured of great work when you are in the hands of a protege of Richard’s!

You can visit this page to see the Edison Pens on his site.  And remember that having Tim as an Edison retailer gives you another option for a custom ground nib on your Edison Pen out the door!

Thanks!

Farewell, Encore!

Hi Pen Fans!

Edison and Goulet have come to a difficult decision regarding the Encore.  It will be discontinued.  Whatever inventory left is currently with the Goulet’s, and is being sold at a discount.  When these pens are gone, they are gone.

This was a bit of a difficult decision, as personally, the Encore is one of my favorite pens!  The LE Encore is still my daily writer, and has been for the last year!  Bottom line, the Encore was a fairly popular pen, but not as popular as the rest of the Production Line, and it didn’t sell with the volume required for us to keep it at a production pace.

The lower demand had a lot to do with price.  The main driving factor behind this was the cast medallion in the finial.  Although I feel that it’s gorgeous, they aren’t cheap to manufacture, and this drove the retail price higher than any other Production Line Pen.

So this decision is probably best, and then we will move onto some other projects that will also be unique and appealing in the near future, so stay tuned!

Please visit the Goulet Website for more information as well as a video from the Goulets regarding this decision.

Price of the pen will be marked down from $165 to $145.  Click here to buy this pen before they are gone!

What a DC Show!

Hi Pen Fans!

Well, the DC Pen Show was unbelievable!

The crowd at DC had not seen our Pneumatic Fillers or Pump Fillers yet, and they were a huge hit!

Speaking with other dealers and participants, we weren’t the only people to have a great show!  Everyone confirmed our feelings that this was without a doubt one of the best DC Supershows ever!

Usually when we attend these shows, I have some time to run around taking some nice photos and put a slideshow up on the website as well as the social medias.  But literally, I have no photos at all to share!  I was only able to leave the table 5-6 times the entire weekend, and those times that I did leave the table, it was for a specific reason, and not for fun photos!

So my apologies!  I realize that a lot of you enjoy my photo coverage of the pen shows, but there just wasn’t any time at all!

We are definitely exhausted, but for those of you who are expecting an email from me, I will return that email today or tomorrow morning.

And there is one photo worth sharing, but it is not one that I took!  This is a photo of my wife and at our display.  Thanks to Thomas H. for sharing!

Behind the Scenes at The Edison Pen Company…

Hi Pen Fans!

I realize that I’m on vacation, but the final cut of a promotional film regarding the Edison Pen Company was just finished, and I couldn’t resist getting it published.

Please see below.

Special thanks to Eric Schneider (producer), Carlos Yasik (filming and editing), and J. Scott Franklin (music).

Within this film you’ll see my wonderful wife Andrea, who plays a huge role in the business.  If you’ve seen us at the pen shows, you would have met her, but she never makes many appearances on the Edison site, so here’s Andrea’s social media debut!

Enjoy!

(PS, we’re still on vacation, so I’ll return all emails around the 29th, and then we’ll launch the new filling system right after that!)

A Crazy Weekend, and Leaving for Vacation….

Hi Pen Fans!

I’m sure that a lot of you are aware of the power outages that I mentioned late last week, which really put a damper on penmaking.

Our power was out from Thursday until Saturday.  Within that time, our sump pump backup failed, which flooded the basement, creating quite a hassle over the weekend.

Everyone is fine and everything is back on track, but this will put me behind on a few pens.  I will contact the owners effected by this directly.

But the real reason for the blog post is to make everyone aware that we will be leaving the middle of this week for vacation, returning around the 26th.  We really only take one vacation each year where we actually travel, so we’re going to try and detach from work.  If I am slow with emails, you’ll know why.

And then stay tuned the week of the 29th.  That’s when we’ll launch this new filling system that I’ve been mentioning lately!

Thanks!
